Abstract
Urry J. (1986) Locality research: the case of Lancaster, Reg. Studies 20, 233–242. An examination of some strengths and weaknesses of locality research especially as exemplified by a small study of the restructuring of the Lancaster TTWA between 1950 and 1980. This restructuring is examined through the investigation of ‘rounds of investments’. Particular attention is directed to the rapid decline of Lancaster's manufacturing base. Some problems are identified in explaining political and cultural change in terms of this pattern of restructuring within particular localities. Arguments are provided as to why ‘localities’ are particularly significant sociological entities, and some problems of future locality-research are elaborated.
