The Effects of Behavioral Monitoring on the Perception of Control

Abstract
A new technique for enhancing perceived control was described and tested. Briefly it is a technique that requires subjects to maintain awareness of making choices by focusing their attention on the rejected alternatives. Participants were required to monitor their behavior for three weeks focusing upon a single activity each day. One group focused on the same activity, repeatedly, another group focused on a different activity each day and finally, the experimental group focused on the rejected alternatives related to the one chosen activity each day. Results suggest that this mindfulness-inducing Rejection Behavioral Monitoring Technique is effective in enhancing control.
