Abstract
THROMBOTIC thrombocytopenic purpura is a clinical entity characterized by hemolytic anemia, fleeting and variable involvement of the central nervous system and a fatal outcome. Until recently, only 77 cases had been reported in the medical literature.1 Ten of these patients were subjected to splenectomy, with no response in 8. Gardner and his associates2 described a patient who had a nine-month remission after removal of the spleen.
