Abstract
A study of 19 consecutive sudden and unexpected infant deaths (“crib deaths”) revealed no mechanical injury to the cervicothoracic vertebral column in any child. Spinal epidural venous congestion, frequently accompanied by foci of epidural hemorrhage, was present in nearly every child. Such findings were observed in infants dying of acute inflammatory disease as well as in children who were victims of the classic “sudden death syndrome.” We conclude that physical trauma docs not play a significant role in the pathogenesis of the “sudden death syndrome.”Keywords
