Abstract
The relationships of pressure and volume, were abnormally altered, and a marked change in pressure was as -sociated with a given change in volume in kyphoscoliosis. In a plot of the data for the pressure and volume of the lung, the curve was displaced from the normal but maintained a slope approaching the normal. The curve of the data for pressure and volume of the thoracic cage showed considerable displacement toward the horizontal, indicating a markedly increased change in pressure with a given change in volume. The compliance of the total respiratory system averaged 1/3 of the average of normal (0.031 I/cm of water). The compliance of the thorax averaged 1/3 of average normal values (0.052 I/cm of water). The major factor in the reduction of compliance of the total respiratory system was due to the increased elastic resistance of the thorax. There was a positive correlation between static compliance of the total respiratory system and that of the thorax (r = 0. 837). There was not a similar relationship with pulmonary compliance.
