Abstract
This article provides an overview of the National Health Interview Survey, describes the Survey's analytic potential in the area of health promotion and disease prevention, andpresents NHIS findings on trends in smoking, alcohol consumption, and overweight between 1983 and 1985, by sex, age, education, income, race, Hispanic origin, and geographic region. The data suggest that social, cultural, and economic differences exist in both the prevalence of and trends in these three important health behaviors. Keywords
