Abstract
The ratio of the cross sections for Penning ionization of Ar, Kr, Xe, O2, N2, CO, NO and H2 by thermal energy He(21S) and He(23S) metastable atoms has been measured using a beam-gas cell technique. Where comparisons can be made, the ratios are in good agreement with previous gas cell measurements, but disagree with results obtained in afterglow studies. Keywords
