Abstract
The free-energy efficiency of Nitrosomonas falls as the amount of C assimilated and the amt. of ammonia oxidized increase; the free-energy efficiency thus falls during the growth of cultures of the organisms. The low free-energy efficiencies reported by other workers for Nitrosomonas are consistent with the high nitrite concns. at which they were detd. Possible reasons for the observed fall in free-energy efficiency are discussed. Keywords
