Crystals of Calcium Oxalate in Kidneys in Uremia

Abstract
Kidney slides of 381 successive autopsies revealed calcium oxalate crystals in 6.2%. They were located in the tubular system and were recognized by their characteristic morphology and confirmed by microincineration and related techniques. They occurred in cases of uremia, frequently of pre-renal origin, and in association with disease of the liver, pancreas, and shock. The origin of the oxalate crystals is uncertain and may be related to retention of calcium oxalate due to both mechanisms. These cases must be distinguished from generalized familial oxalosis in which many organs are involved and renal oxalate stones develop.
