Metabolic Differences between Obese Overweight and Muscular Overweight Men

Abstract
Exaggerated plasma insulin responses during glucose or tolbutamide tolerance tests and subnormal plasma growth-hormone increments after insulin-induced hypoglycemia were documented in 10 obese men as compared to 10 normal-weight men of the same age. Similar abnormalities did not exist in 10 extremely muscular weight lifters who were matched in age and degree of overweight to the obese group. Mean triceps skin-fold thicknesses of the obese subjects were approximately four and eight times greater than values of control and muscular men, respectively. These data suggest that metabolic changes in overweight persons are related more to degrees of body-fat accumulation than to deviations from ideal body weight or excessive lean tissue mass.
