Abstract
Diazoxide, a nondiuretic thiazide, was administered intravenously to 55 hypertensive patients. Two hundred to 300 mg resulted in prompt reduction of arterial pressure (within 1 to 2 minutes), increase in cardiac output and decrease in total peripheral resistance. There were no signs of collapse or cerebral ischemia. The duration of action was 2 to 3 hours. If the duration of action could be prolonged diazoxide would be considered an ideal agent for the treatment of hypertensive emergencies. Keywords
