Abstract
IN most cases of cardiac hypertrophy an antecedent cause, such as hypertension, valvular disease or coronary arteriosclerosis, is easily demonstrable. Hypertrophy in certain patients with congestive heart failure exists without evidence of any of the known causes of heart disease.The first recorded case of so-called idiopathic hypertrophy of the heart was described in 1901 by Josserand and Gallavardin.1 In 1944 Levy and Von Glahn2 collected 14 cases from the literature and added 10 of their own.
