Abstract
The main objective of this article is to interrogate some of the dominant conceptualizations that have come to cluster around the concept of civil society in recent theory. Due to a variety of historical factors, these conceptualizations have romanticized the concept to a large extent. In the process, meaningful or politically relevant discussion of civil society has often been obfuscated. The article problematizes the notion of civil society as the 'third sphere' in recent theory, and illustrates the argument with recent examples from India, with the intention of restoring some of the important insights that should logically attend any serious understanding of the concept. Keywords
