Abstract
The electro-optic contribution to the field-induced first-order Raman scattering cross section in alkali halide crystals is calculated using measured values for hyperpolarizabilities. The electro-optic contribution is much larger than the previously reported atomic displacement contribution. The results cast some doubt on the accuracy of the reported hyperpolarizability values. Keywords
