Abstract
This contribution explores the process of programmatic renewal in the British Labour Party from 1987 to 1991, the so‐called Policy Review. It considers the mechanics of the review, the key programmatic changes that occurred and the main factors shaping the process. It concludes that a substantial overhaul of policy took place, but queries whether this constituted ‘programmatic renewal’. It briefly considers Labour's future programmatic orientation in the wake of a fourth successive election defeat.
