Hypnosis and Electrodermal Responses

Abstract
45 paid male and female volunteer Sa were equally divided into three groups: (a) hypnosis instructions, (b) relaxation but no hypnosis instructions, and (c) no instructions. Following an EDOR habituation period to tone stimulation, the EDOR of all groups was conditioned by pairing the tone (CS) with a mild electric shock (UCS). Differential instructions followed conditioning and preceded extinction. Conditioned EDORs were unaffected by instructions. EDSF data support an enhanced relaxation interpretation of hypnosis which does not differ from a relaxed, but not hypnotized, condition. Revised interpretations of previous EDSF findings are suggested.
