The Ecology of Lough Ine: VII. Distribution of Some Common Plants and Animals of the Littoral and Shallow Sublittoral Regions

Abstract
Distribution and abundance of 50 common species of marine littoral and sublittoral algae or animals living on rock were studied throughout the Lough Ine area; maps are given for each. The sites examined are accurately delimited and described. Eight species were distributed generally; the remainder show clear geographical preferences, most of which can be interpreted in terms of varying degree of exposure to waves. In respect of distribution, littoral species treat the rapids as sheltered, in spite of the strong current, whereas sublittoral species tend to treat them as exposed. The current in the rapids does not protect littoral species from desiccation while the tide is out, but it does protect sublittoral species from the settling of sediment and other physical and chemical extremes associated with stagnation.
