Giemsa-banding pattern of chromosomes in Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Abstract
The Giemsa-banding pattern of diploid and polytene chromosomes following the BSG [barium hydroxide-saline-Giemsa] technique and trypsin treatment in P. vulgaris cv. Tsanava Red 41 (2n = 22) is reported. All chromosomes except 1 metacentric pair show either terminal or intercalary or both types of bands. One of the metacentric pairs shows centromeric band. One of the chromosomes with secondary constriction is heteromorphic. The percentage of the Giesma-banding over the diploid complement was 70%. This Giemsa-banding technique is suitable for detection of the chromosomes in the karyotype.
