Abstract

Effects of main-stem girdling of early vegetative stage of soybean plants by Spissililus festinus (Say) were studied in small-plot tield tests from 1978 through 1980. Plant responses after girdling were observed and categorized into five main responses. In 2 of the 3 study years, yield reductions occurred when girdling levels were >65%. Possible yield losses from mortality and inability to harvest girdled plants were compensated for by healthy ungirdled and girdled plants that recovered. Based on these data, a damage threshold for main-stem girdling of early vegetative soybean plants by S. festinus was established for Arkansas.
