Abstract
Coscinodiscus cocconeiformis Schmidt was transferred to the genus Rhaphoneis by Hanna & Grant based on observations of non-type specimens. Comparison of Schmidt's type illustration with the photograph published by Hanna & Grant suggests that the two diatoms are dissimilar, and this has been confirmed by examination of their slide. Coscinodiscus cocconeiformis Schmidt non sensu Hanna & Grant differs significantly from typical species of Coscinodiscus. Although it has several affinities with Psammodiscus, Rhaphoneis and Detonia, it is nonetheless distinct from these and a new genus, Diplomenora, is erected to include it.Keywords
