Infrared intensities as a quantitative measure of intramolecular interactions. Part XXXI. Intramolecular interactions in arylacetylenes

Abstract
Integrated i.r. intensities of both the ν8 ring-stretching and ν(CC) bands of a series of m- and p-substituted phenylacetylenes indicate that the ethynyl group is a weak resonance donor when attached to a benzene ring. The group can become a strong resonance donor or acceptor in situations of high electron demand or excess, respectively.
