Evaluation of the Lithium RBC/Plasma Ratio as a Predictor of the Prophylactic Effect of Lithium Treatment in Affective Disorders

Abstract
62 patients with affective disorder, 31 unipolar, 22 bipolar and 9 cycloid psychotics who had received prophylactic lithium therapy for 0,3 to 7,5 years were studied. Lithium in plasma, lithium in red blood cells (RBC) and the lithium ratio (RBC/plasma) were estimated. The lithium ratio varied widely from 0,19 to 1,0 but the ratio does not seem to be of predictive value in determining for which patients prophylactic lithium therapy will succeed. Es wurden 62 Patienten mit affektiven Störungen, 31 unipolar, 22 bipolar, und 9 cycloide Psychotiker, die eine prophylaktische Lithium-Behandlung während 0,3 bis 7,5 Jahren erhalten hatten, untersucht. Es wurden Bestimmungen der Lithium-Konzentration im Plasma, in den Erythrozyten und des Quotienten aus Plasma und Erythrozyten-Konzentration durchgeführt. Der Lithium-Quotient, der in einem weiten Bereich von 0,19 bis 1,0 schwankte, erwies sich nicht als brauchbarer Prädiktor für Erfolg oder Mißerfolg einer prophylaktischen Lithium-Therapie.
