The velocity structure of the core of the giant H II region NGC 3603

Abstract
Hα and [N II] line profiles have been obtained along two lines across the core of the giant H II region NGC 3603. The main features detected and their likely origins are as follows: (i) Several continuous components are visible across the entire region observed, with peak-to-peak velocity differences of up to 150 km s−1. These large-scale motions were most probably set up before the formation of the central cluster, possibly by the action of earlier supernovae. (ii) Two smaller shell-like structures have also been detected and one of these is visible on photographs of NGC 3603. These shells are believed to be wind-driven bubbles of order 104 yr old. The larger bubble may be driven by a Wolf-Rayet star.
