Abstract
Method of preparation of the diabetogenic substance followed was that described by Houssay and Biosotti (Compt. Rend. Soc. di Biol. 113: 469, 1933), being modified only to suit the exps. undertaken. Diabetic urines studied were received from the following types of cases: controlled and uncontrolled taking insulin, and controlled not taking insulin (balanced with diet). Tests were carried out, for each type of urine, on 3 rabbits and 3 dogs. The factor was injected intraven. and blood samples for quantitative sugar detns. were taken before and after injection. The factor was found in the urines of severe diabetic patients in a comparatively greater degree than in mild diabetics; in non-diabetic urine it was found, if at all, in small quantities. A Berkefeld filtrate of the material at pH 5.7 and 9 gave no blood sugar rise and boiling for an hr. completely destroyed the active agent. It was absorbed by kaolin and charcoal and soluble in water and 60% alcohol. It was inferred that the substance is not associated with the urinary protein. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
