Abstract
DESPITE THE advent of a number of modern medical therapeutic approaches, sepsis and multiple organ failure remains one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality (as high as 60%) in the intensive care unit.1 Many studies have suggested that development of multiple organ failure is strongly linked to the initial presentation of sepsis.2 However, the precise mechanism by which sepsis induces subsequent multiple organ failure is still poorly understood. In this respect, over the last few years, an increasing number of studies have focused on the contribution of the barrier failure of the gut in the initiation and development of these conditions.3Keywords
