Thyromimetic Activity of 3,5,3′,5′-Tetramethylthyronine

Abstract
Administration of microgram doses of 3,5,3′,5′-tetramethylthyronine (T-Me4) to thyroidectomized rats increased oxygen consumption, increased heart rate, promoted growth and reduced pituitary size. Alterations in the sizes of the kidneys, adrenals, heart and spleen were also comparable to those produced by thyroxine. Thus, T-Me4 possesses thyromimetic activity which appears to be approximately 1% that of T4. (Endocrinology93: 201, 1973)
