Abstract
The uptake of 14C-5-hydroxytryptamine (14C-5-HT) by platelets was studied. Alteration of the carbohydrate-rich coating of platelets with enzymes depressed 14C-5-HT uptake. With the exception of neuraminidase, enzymatic treatment also released significant amounts of 14C-5-HT taken up by the platelets before the treatment. The decreased uptake of 14C-5-HT by platelets after treatment with neuraminidase could be prevented, at least in part. Ganglioside added after neuraminidase treatment but before incubation with 14C-5-HT partly restored the ability of the platelets to take up 14C-5-HT. Treatment of platelets with sodium metaperiodate enhanced markedly the uptake of 14C-5-HT.
