Late Results of Operation for Patent Ductus Arteriosus

Abstract
The study concerns the late results observed at follow-up of 70 patients, in whom P.D.A. was the only cardiac defect for which they were subjected to operation. At the time of follow-up there had been no deaths among the patients. Organic heart diseases associated with symptoms were manifest in 2 patients, whereas heart diseases were absent in the remaining 68 patients. Recanalization was not observed in any case. In patients in whom pulmonary hypertension had been manifest prior to operation, and who at the time of operation had been less than 2 years old, the systolic pressure in the pulmonary artery had fallen to normal, or almost normal, levels.
