Abstract
The differing viewpoints with regard to the treatment of gastric ulcer reflect insufficient knowledge of the lesion, its life history, the problem of differential diagnosis, and the results of therapy. The purpose of this paper is to review the records of selected patients in order to learn more of the cause and course of the ulcer, the diagnostic error, and the value of the various therapeutic procedures. The selection of patients for a study of this type is always difficult and subject to differing opinions. It has been and remains our contention that careful study utilizing all the diagnostic procedures available permits a sufficient accuracy of diagnosis to justify nonsurgical treatment in certain patients, not in all. Consequently, patients who were subjected to operation at once or within the first few weeks of observation because of definite or probable evidence of neoplasm have been excluded from the group.
