Positional Behaviour of the Plasma Column in a Shell-Less Octopole Tokamak

Abstract
A plasma column with a D-shaped cross section was produced in an octopole magnetic field. When the initial vertical position of the plasma column was on the equatorial plane of the torus, no vertical displacement occured. When the initial vertical position was above that plane, however, a vertical displacement occured as the column shifted horizontally. Thus, it was demonstrated that the initial vertical position of the plasma column should be carefully adjusted to reduce the vertical displacement.
