Abstract
The effectiveness of some topically applied bis-biguanides on experimental dental caries was tested in albino hamsters infected with Streptococcus mutatis and maintained on the high-sucrose diet 2000. Applications of an 11 or 22 mM solution of chlorhexidine digluconate once a day produced a considerable caries reduction. When lower concentration was used – 2.2 mM applied twice a day – the effect was proportionally smaller. Of other bis-biguanides tested, chlorhexidine diacetate, chlorhexidine difluoride, 2-ethylhexylhexidine dichloride and 1,3-dimetylpentylhexidine dichloride gave substantial caries reductions. The topical application of the various solutions had no adverse effect on weight gain. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
