A Solid–Liquid Diffusion Couple Study of Peritectic Reactions

Abstract
The peritectic reaction liquid + α → β has been examined in several binary alloy systems by a diffusion couple technique. The β phase is formed as a diffusion layer on the surface of the α when a couple is set up consting of the α and liquid phases. It was observed that the rate of reaction depends the miscibility gaps between the α and β and the β and liquid phases. Fast reaction rates are favoured by either a small α/β or β/liquid miscibility gap and a wide composition range for the reaction.
