Earnings of Men and Women in Colombia: 1976-1995

Abstract
In this paper we study the evolution of earnings of men and women in Colombia between 1976 and 1995. Mincer earning equations were estimated for 1976, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995; and the female equation was corrected for selection bias, but this did not change the results. A panel of data was built in order to capture both cross section and longitudinal aspects of the evolution of earnings. We find that the rates of return to education in the panel estimation are equal for men and women, and close to 11%, therefore implying that the main differences in wages across gender are due to different returns to labor experience and to the number of hours worked per week.
