Abstract
This report contains descriptions of the outer and inner boundaries of the 5th, 50th, and 95th percentile grasping-reach envelopes of men and of women. The reach envelopes are intended to guide the placement of critical hand operated controls for the seated operating and working body positions. The most important envelope is the 5th percentile, since it describes that past which 95 percent of the using population can reach. Thus, a controller located at the boundary of this envelope can be reached by an equivalent percentage of the male or female adult populations. A critical review of previous investigations of arm reach and a description of the Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory's Grasping- Reach Measuring Device are presented. The data-gathering procedures and the methods of analyses are included. Applications of the data are also discussed. Data are presented in both graphic and tabular form. Vertical (X-Z) and (Y-Z) planes, and horizontal (X-Y) planes through the various percentile envelopes are presented. Keywords
