Living Arrangements and Schooling of Orphaned Children and Adolescents in Uganda

Abstract
This paper estimates the determinants of living arrangements and school attendance of orphans in Uganda. We find that female adolescents aged 15-18 who are either double or "virtual" double orphans (single orphans who do not live with the remaining parent) are significantly less likely to attend school. Among children aged 7-14, we do not find any differences in school attendance between orphans and non-orphans. Further analyses indicate that education is an important factor to enter non-farm activities in rural Uganda, suggesting that orphaned female adolescents would be disadvantaged in job markets.
