Developing AAC technologies: a personal story and philosophy

Abstract
Research into and development of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technologies is an exciting but complex field The development of a technologically based system which will be an alternative to, or will augment, the speech modality for the interpersonal communication needs of people with communication dysfunction is not an easy task. This is only a young field and thus much of the research methodology is not yet well defined. It is also a growing field, and one to which we would wish to attract new practitioners, and provide appropriate guidance to them. In any technological development project, it is important to define clearly a number of parameters of the project. These are: the client group; the knowledge base needed to solve the problems; the potential technologies that will help and their characteristics; and the time scales envisaged for completion of the research. The authors have been part of a research team working in this field for many years, and, in this paper, they will examine three research strategies which they have found particularly beneficial, illustrating the concepts discussed mainly by reference to personal experiences. The paper concentrates on a relatively narrow definition of technology – that which is often referred to as ‘high technology’ or information technology. This is not to deny, in any way, the importance to the AAC field of solutions based on other technology, and the authors would hope that some of the comments in the paper are also appropriate to researchers who are working with systems and techniques which do not depend on these technologies. La recherche et le développement des technologies concernant la Communication Augmentative et Alternative (abréviation anglaise: AAC) constitue un domaine passionnant, mais complexe. Le développement d'un système fondé sur la technologie, et destiné à remplacer ou augmenter le mode de la parole pour satisfaire les besoins communicatifs de gens souffrant de dysfonction communicative, n'est pas facile. Il s'agit d'un domaine récent, et de ce fait une bonne partie de la méthodologie de recherche n'est pas encore bien définie; c'est aussi un domaine en pleine expansion, pour lequel nous aimerions attirer une nouvelle génération de praticiens, et leur fournir des conseils utiles. Dans tout projet de développement technologique il est important de définir clairement un certain nombre de paramètres. Ces paramètres sont: le groupe des clients; la base de connaissances nécessaire pour la solution des problèmes; les technologies qui pourraient ĉtre utiles et leurs caractéristiques; et le laps de temps envisagé pour terminer la recherche. Les auteurs font partie depuis de nombreuses années d'une équipe de recherche qui travaille dans ce domaine et au cours de cet article ils examinent trois stratégies de recherche qu'ils ont trouvées particulièrement utiles; ils illustrent les concepts discutés en se référant principalement à des expériences personnelles. Die Erforschung und Entwicklung ergänzender und alternativer Kommunikationstechnologien ist ein spannendes aber komplexes Beschäftigungsfeld. Die Entwicklung eines technologischen Systems, das als Alternative oder Ergänzung zur Sprechmodalität für die interpersonellen Kommunikationsbedürfnisse von Menschen mit einer kommunikativen Dysfunktion dient, ist keine einfache Aufgabe. Es ist eine neuer Bereich, in dem ein Großteil der Forschungsmethodologie noch nicht wohldefiniert ist. Es ist aber auch ein wachsender Bereich, für den wir das Interesse neuer Arbeitsgruppen wecken möchten, und die wir beratend unterstützen möchten. In einem technologischen Entwicklungsprojekt ist es wichtig, eine Anzahl von Parametern klar zu definieren. Diese sind: Die Klientengruppe; die zur Lösung des Problems benötigte Wissensbasis; die potentiellen hilfebietenden Technologien sowie ihre Charakteristiken; der für die Durchführung der Forschung benötigte Zeitraum. Die Verfasser arbeiten seit vielen Jahren in einer Forschungsgruppe zusammen. In diesem Artikel erörtern sie 3 Forschungsstrategien, die sie besonders hilfreich gefunden haben. Die dargelegten Konzepte werden weitgehend mit Beispielen aus persönlichen Erfahrungen illustriert.
