Preview If you think of acupuncture as a hoax or gimmick, let Dr Steiner change your mind with this scholarly review. Approaching his subject from two extremely different perspectives, he first explores the neuroanatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and uses of acupuncture from the standpoint of current Western knowledge and understanding. in part 2, which begins on page 71, he turns to the Eastern perspective, attempting to remove the cultural barriers to an understanding of traditional Chinese medicine in general and of acupuncture in particular. Dr Steiner's article was subjected to rigorous scrutiny by three physicians (including a neurosurgeon) with well-known interest and background in Chinese medicine, plus two family physicians and the director of a pain center. Five members of this illustrious panel recommended publication.
