Abstract
This is the first recorded case of an unilateral pleural effusion caused by the penetration of an indwelling polyethylene catheter into the pleural space. As an emergency procedure an intravenous catheter was introduced in the left basilic vein through a cut-down. The catheter proceeded from the basilic vein into the axillary, innominate and superior vena cava at its junction with the azygos vein, at which level the catheter presumably perforated through the venous wall into the right pleural space. A special emphasis was put on the diagnostic difficulty that such case may present when the catheter in use is not radio-opaque.Keywords
