Abstract
Pleochroic anthraquinone dyes have been prepared with order parameters of up to 0.70 when dissolved in liquid crystals. Over 100 dyes have been synthesised, in which a variety of substituents have been incorporated into the 1,4, and 5 positions on the anthraquinone nucleus, affording red, purple, blue and green dyes. Several dyes showed significantly higher stability than most other high order parameter azo-dyes. Some dyes showed solubility and order parameter sufficiently high to allow their employment in liquid crystal displays. Keywords
