VELOCITY EFFECTS ON LEIDENFROST BOILING OF VARIOUS LIQUIDS

Abstract
Leidenfrost vaporization time measurements were made for water, ethanol, carbon tetrachloride, and nitrogen with surface velocities from 0 to 460 cm/sec, for plate temperatures up to 400° C, and for various surface conditions (roughness). Surface velocity was found to appreciably affect the vaporization rates of the drops. The vaporization time data has been correlated with reasonable accuracy. In addition, photographs are presented which show the significant effect of the vapor shear on the shape of the liquid drops.
