A NEW SULFONAMIDE (GANTRISIN®)

Abstract
A NEW compound, 3,4-dimethyl-5-sulfanilamido-isoxazole (gantrisin®), appears to show considerable promise as an effective sulfonamide; so far in our hands it has produced no renal complications. The antibacterial and clinical effectiveness of this compound has been reported on by Schnitzer and others,1Sarnoff and others,2Lazarus,3Rhoads and others,4Haines and Miceli,5Narins6and Rodgers and Colby.7It was found by these workers to compare favorably with other commonly used sulfonamides. Their results indicated that it is effective in the treatment of infections of the urinary tract, especially those caused by Escherichia coli. It has also been found to be moderately effective against Proteus. It has been used as the sole bacteriostatic agent in 10 cases of meningococcic meningitis4with complete recovery. The toxic manifestations encountered have been similar in nature to those produced with other sulfonamides with the exception of the absence of renal complications.
