Abstract
The important features of the photoelastic coating technique are described and the effects of shear lag and differential thermal expansion are outlined. Applications of the technique in the study of stresses in components of internal combustion engines are presented and the significant influence the work has exerted on the development and optimisation of these components is shown. Keywords
