Staging Trees: Theory and Early Development

Abstract
Presented here is a prototype prognostic stroke staging tree that establishes the likelihood of patients achieving a specific stage of functional recovery on the basis of admission functional status. Patients who achieve the stage, referred to as modified functional independence, must, at a minimum, be able to eat, groom, dress the upper body, and manage bowel and bladder functions without assistance by discharge from inpatient medical rehabilitation. The staging tree represents the first component of a larger prognostic ability staging system (PASS) anticipated to have many such trees for predicting the achievement of a wide variety of recovery stages.
