Abstract
Observations were made on new seedlings and vars. of sweet potatoes grown in field plots in St. Landry and East Baton Rouge Parishes, Louisiana, from 1939 through 1946, for resistance to attack by the sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarious elegantulus. Records were made on infestation in the vines and in the potatoes. Large soft crowns or stems appeared to be favor-able for weevil feeding and breeding. Seedlings and vars. that possess long roots to which the potatoes are attached, and that set potatoes scattered in the hill, appeared desirable for retarding or preventing weevil attack. In the 6 yrs., 1939 through 1946, for which records are available, sweet potatoes of the seedlings and vars. that showed the lowest infestation were high in moisture and carotene and low in starch content and, conversely, those that showed the highest infestation were low in moisture and carotene and high in starch content. Keywords
