C. edulis, or khat, a plant indigenous to Yemen, Ethiopia, and East Africa, has sympathomimetic and euphoriant effects. Its role in the ecomomic, social and political lives of people in North and South Yemen and certain clinical and psychiatric aspects are discussed.
