Abstract
An alcoholic extract of the dried leaves of Adhatoda vasica Ne es was subjected to mild saponification with KOH. An ether extract of the saponified mixture yielded a white crystalline material, Vasakin. Vasakin is non–nitrogenous, neutral, and insoluble in water, melting at 273–274° G with decomposition. It blocks exogenous and endogenous acetyl choline, adrenaline, and has strong local anaesthetic activity. It inhibits salivary secretion induced by pilocarpine. It is not toxic in doses upto 1 g./kg. and does not affect behaviour or motor activity in experimental animals. It is less potent than atropine in cholinergic blocking activity. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
