Abstract
Four soil samples were incubated under aerobic conditions after treatment with (NH4)2SO4,NaH2PO4 and/or CaCO2 and evolved N2O was measured by a gas chromatographic technique. Emission of N2O from NH4-amended soils increased with the addition of CaCO2 and/or phosphate. The addition of CaCO3 and phosphate enhanced the growth of ammonium oxidizing population and the accumulation of nitrite. The increased emission of N2O from soils may be due to the effects of CaCO3 and phosphate on both mechanism per se and nitrifying population. Keywords
