Abstract
Owing to complicated many-body interactions and lack of a static structure our knowledge of the liquid state is more limited than that of the gaseous and solid states. A better understanding of liquids may be achieved through the spectroscopic study of solutions. One method of probing molecular dynamics and intermolecular forces is through the investigation of vibrational, rotational, and translational transitions of a dissolved molecule using infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Such studies are the subject of this article. Other types of spectroscopic information on solutions will be explored in subsequent articles. Keywords
