Abstract
Chromosomes were counted in the root-tips of 192 cultivars and strains of Vigna sinensis (L.) Savi from 42 countries. "Wild", "cultivated", var. cylindrica, and var. sesquipedalis forms were examined and only 2n=22 chromosomes were found. Pollen mother cells from 10 entries showed only n=ll chromosomes. This was in spite of repeated reports in the literature of 2n=24 and n=12 chromosomes for V. sinensis and even the suggestion that there are chromosome races in this species.
