Appearance of Unilateral Infiltrative Exophthalmos of Graves' Disease After the Successful Treatment of the Same Process in the Contralateral Eye by Apparently Total Surgical Hypophysectomy

Abstract
A patient with Graves' disease and progressive infiltrative exophthalmos of the right eye failed to respond to orbital decompression. The infiltrative process improved following total surgical hypophysectomy. Interim evaluations suggested that the hypophysectomy was complete. Two and one-half years after hypophysectomy the patient developed severe infiltrative exophthalmos of the left eye. Additional study supported the conclusion that there was no demonstrable functioning pituitary tissue. The implications of recurrent exophthalmos after pituitary ablation are discussed.
